Structure and price

The book is a good book and I can understand the 5 star reviews. The author knows his stuff and I certainly learned most of what I hoped to learn reading it. However its length and depth are more comparable to a sub $10 kindle price than the ~$20 I paid.

If you like every example given in the context of a larger program, even if you don't understand the rest of the program, then this book is probably great for you.

If you like to learn a concept, see an example or 2 of it and then move to the next concept, then this book may not be for you. It certainly was not for me. The structure is such that the first half of the book is filled with examples that are given the caveat "this will be explained later". Personally, I am unable to hold 5 things I don't need to know yet in my head in order to understand the context of an otherwise simple section of code. The examples don't so much grow with each chapter as you take out pure HTML and replace it with JS and Angular stuff.

This book is not a concise list of the features and functions that are available in AngularJS, and then placed in a context with examples. It is a good (but subjectively chosen) path to building a specific application. The explanations of the why are very good and the Authors style is "I chose this because of this..." which I enjoyed. But I personally learn better from a more standard structure.

There is an additional point I wanted to mention:

The bulk of the examples in the book hinge around the development of an online store (which I liked). But they all rely on you also installing several programs (mainly NodeJS, MongoDB and Deployd). Deployd is no longer/barely supported, which Freeman acknowledges but gives no alternatives. At least offering something pre-built for MongoDB or even using a couple of JSON files to simulate interacting with a database would have been nice as for me the 2 hours it took to get Deployd running correctly was time I would have rather spent learning AngularJS instead.

Great resource for those starting from scratch with AngularJS

My background: I have been building .NET applications for 8 years, with experience in web application development, and I have some experience in MVC-style technology with the Microsoft ASP.NET MVC implementation, though that knowledge did not play a huge part in learning Angular.

I am a fan of all of Adam's books - I own four (MVC5, JQuery2, and HTML5 as well). As with his other books, this is among the best technology books I've ever read for a technology I'm learning from scratch.

The first third of the book covers the basics, having you build build an actual application that slowly introduces you to the features of Angular. This is followed up by deep dive chapters on each of those concepts that go into heavy detail. I read the first third of the book all the way through, and am now skipping around to read what is relevant to me while I build my own sample project. Just like with many of Adam's other books, it might be just slightly frustrating to not see the full picture during the build of this "Sports Store", but once you get through this, you will likely breeze through the remaining chapters as all the concepts come together, or you can always read the deep dive chapters if you want to understand more about a particular feature. The chapters have great organization and flow nicely, and it's easy to use as a reference as well as a tutorial-style book.

Adam Freeman's writing style and examples are thorough, step by step, and easy to follow. He continually states not to worry about certain topics too much in the first third, but gives you a clear reference point as to where he covers that topic later in the book in detail if you do want to skip ahead.

Another great quality of Adam's books, including this one, is that he approaches technology as a true software architect - he does not mandate or preach to you about one approach or another, rather, he gives you what his take is on pros and cons, then suggest that you always make your own decisions on your own projects according to your needs. For example, many, many people ask about JQuery vs Angular, and Adam has a few succinct, great blurbs in the book about the philosophical differences between jQuery and Angular, and suggestions on when you should use each.

Up front, Adam includes walkthroughs or primers of a few tools that help you build with Angular, including LiveReload, Deployd, Bootstrap, and Node.js, ensuring that even if you have no knowledge of these tools (which I had none to very little) you have a comprehensive, one-stop-shop textbook that covers the examples from the ground up.

Overall, if you have some web development experience but are brand new to Angular, this is a great book to pick up. If you are brand new to Javascript, HTML, and CSS you'll likely want to study up on that first a bit, though Adam does include primers here, they serve better as a refresher rather than deep learning.

A Lot and a Little

This book holds a lot of information, but unfortunately it's not quite the "right" information. It starts off delving deep into examples that aren't explained until later, and when the 'instruction' part comes it starts off well and is thorough, but then seems to fall apart in later chapters like it was rushed to be completed. A lot of information, but not quite a reference book. A lot of examples but some of them are difficult to follow the reasoning behind them. A little bit badly organized, but despite ALL of that I would actually recommend it since there's not really any book out there right on AngularJS with the breadth of info in it like this book.

Juicy Read

I thought this book was a fast, juicy read and couldn't put it down. I have read many auto/biographies and found this one entertaining. Sure I think Holly convinced herself that she was in love with Hef and then after the break-up said to herself, "What was I thinking?". People are quick to make judgement but I know I have been in relationships when I was younger and thinking back I can't believe I thought I was in love, so for me she gets a pass.

I have seen reports on E News that she was lying about the bedroom situation with Hef, but if you read Izabella St. James' book "Bunny Tales" she seems to coincide with Holly's story, there's not much going on in THAT bedroom. By the way I think Daphne is the code name for Izabella in the book.

It does not sound like Hefner was a very nice guy, but why would you expect him to be, he's an 80 year old man dating a strand of 20 somethings at the same time. He cannot possibly be so disillusioned to believe that these kids are really in love with him. He knows he's being used so why would he respect them?

Even though I think a lot of Holly's decisions are ridiculous and she made a lot of her own problems - like why stay in the Playboy mansion if people were being so awful to her and she felt like crying all the time, I still like her. She is ambitious and driven and has worked hard. I'm glad she is happy and hope she makes better decisions while raising her daughter.

I know a lot of people are going to rip apart Holly and her book about her life story, but if you bought the book you bought it out if morbid curiosity. You didn't buy it to hear a heartwarming love story gone awry. You know she's going to reveal crazy personal details and tell about the cat fights and unusual experiences at the mansion. So if you like down and dirty tell-alls and "truth is stranger than fiction" details this is your book. Overall I think all the Playboy people deserve each other, they are all cut from the same cloth.

I wanted to know what her relationship with Hef was really like. They slept together every night

I finished Holly Madison's book with more questions than when I started. As others have said, it is surprisingly well written, in terms of styling and format. But I guess I had some questions that I hoped would be answered, and they weren't. Girls Next Door was the one guilty-pleasure show I watched regularly. And, I grew up with Playboy in my home--and of course many of us wondered what really went on at the Mansion. So, when this book promised to be a "tell all" I thought it would actually tell ALL--but other than one very veiled description of one night of sex after an outing, it really never was mentioned again. I realize that Holly is now a married woman and mother, and maybe those days are so far in her rear view mirror she didn't want to go back there. Personally, I could have done with much less description of the various "mean girls" and continual cat fighting. I wanted to know what her relationship with Hef was really like. They slept together every night... did crossword puzzles and ate in bed. Did they cuddle? Did they ever make love (ever)? Did they talk, discuss the day, share their lives? If he told Holly she was the "love of my life", how did he explain his need for other women? What went on between then, for seven years, with all that time together? I just didn't feel the book covered that.

Here's the thing: I grew up in the '60's, and Playboy tried to reflect those times of "burn the bra" liberation. It was WOMEN who were liberated, to have sexual partners, to have careers, to do and be whatever they wanted. Hef sort of positioned himself as the champion of all that. So, what happened? And what happened to this generation of young women that they would find it interesting to be "arm-candy" to an old man, and allow themselves to be curfewed and kept under lock and key? I really want to understand this better.

How did Hef justify all the women, while holding the women there hostage with curfews and jealousy? How DID he manage to be with other women, if he was alone every night with Holly? Sneak off to another room? Have sex during the day? And how did it feel to be one of many... I was even curious if condoms were used, and STD's watched. Given the lifestyle... it's a reasonable question.

I wonder about Holly, and why everything she valued was about looks and exteriors. She constantly said she wanted to be loved for more than her looks, but even in Peepshow, it was all about being a blond sex kitten. How was that any different from GND or Playboy? Is she just not able to see past that? I admit, this is probably "my" problem... I just don't get the self-absorption of so many young women, or the focus so entirely on the physical, on being "pretty enough". What about an education? What about developing a spiritual life, not even religion... but just the acknowledgment that we are so much more than our looks.
But, Holly is young, and this has been a big life so far, with lots of learning. I would just really like to have read more about what these relationships were really all about... how in the world Hef got away with what he did with so many young women... and what was going on in Holly's mind and heart that would have allowed her to stay as long as she did. I think there is something missing in this book, and if she would have dug a little deeper, she could have explained it all.

About the Author
Like her main character, Marivi Soliven moved from the Philippines to California, where she now lives and works as an interpreter. Several of her short stories and essays from her 16 books have appeared in anthologies and she taught creative writing at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, the Ayala Museum and the University of California at San Diego. This is her first novel.

In THE MANGO BRIDE you will be introduced to a variety of women from different generations and divergent social classes, some who remain in their native Philippines and others who, for a variety of reasons, leave to begin new lives in the United States. One of these women is Concha, the matriarch of a prominent Filipino family, is more concerned with what the neighbors will think and how her family's status in the community will be negatively affected than with the protection and welfare of her family members. Another is Clara, an impoverished young woman who is seen as an unsuitable mate for the scion of a wealthy family. The fallout of their individual actions and a decades old scandal culminates in Oakland, California when the paths of the offspring of these two women cross with unexpected and tragic results.

Addressed by the author, Marivi Soliven, are questions like: What is it that constitutes real freedom and is it more difficult for a woman to achieve than a man because of economic obstacles? Is love and concern for another human being what embodies and epitomizes the true definition of "family"? How often does the pursuit of a dream have unanticipated and nightmarish consequences? This is a family saga containing a myriad of components that run the gamut from immigration, mail order brides, social prejudice and class conflict to veteran's issues, domestic violence and the problems of assimilation. While possessing some soap opera undertones and a lack of explanation as to the meaning of some of the Tagalog phrases used, I nevertheless found THE MANGO BRIDE to be an absorbing and thought provoking read that presented an informative and exhaustive look at the Filipino culture.

A wonderful book

It's wonderful! Made me miss Manila. The bus scene in Edsa, the snack vendors in the neighborhood, the leafy campus in Quezon City -- they all evoke the unique atmosphere of the Philippines. So many parts of the book made me hungry, too! Now I'm craving delicious Filipino specialties like "ukoy" and "pancit molo." The ending left me wanting for more. I wanted to read another chapter! But it was a smart way to end the book. This is going to be made into a movie and I'm looking forward to it!

Excellent, compelling, culturally sensitive, wonderful story.

Once I started the Mango Bride, found I could not put it down. I admire how the author is able to bring all of the characters together and more importantly do justice to hard topics like immigration; class; what is deemed "proper"in the Phillippines by older generations compared to those Pilipinos like myself who are first generation; mail order brides and domestic violence. I know that I will be giving "The Mango Bride" as presents for my friends and family. Even though this is fiction, Pilipino cousins and children of first generation Pilipinos will appreciate the subleties of the characters in this important book. And if you are just looking for a good, compelling story, "The Mango Bride" is for you. Marivi-Maraming salamat for taking the time to write a thoughtful, well researched, easy to read, culturally right on book.

I got the privileged to attend a Saturday morning meeting at Wal-mart when the author was speaking. I ran over to look for this at the Wal-mart across the street and it wasn't available so I had to find it at Amazon. It's an amazing story. Too bad it's not in print anymore!!!

You can read this entire book in about an hour. Invest an hour to make your life (and the lives of those around you) much richer - you won't be disappointed.

The book teaches three simple lessons:
- Relationships matter most in life
- Try to do a little more
- Only you can make you happy

While the lessons seem pretty straight-forward, they are told in an extremely powerful way. Honestly, it's a real tear jerker as it's one of the most authenticate ways to live that I have ever heard or read about.

About the Author

Barbara Norrander (Ph.D., The Ohio State University) is associate professor of political science at the University of Arizona. She is the author of Super Tuesday: Regional Politics and Presidential Primaries, as well as contributing author to several edited volumes. Currently an editorial board member of the American Journal of Political Science, Norrander has also written numerous journal articles on public opinion, political behavior, and other subjects.

Clyde Wilcox is a professor of government at Georgetown University. He is the author or coauthor of several books, including Serious Money: Fundraising and Contributing in Presidential Nomination Campaigns (1995), Onward Christian Soldiers: The Christian Right in American Politics (1996), and Interest Groups in American Campaigns: The New Face of Electioneering (1999). His edited books include Women in Elected Office: Past, Present, and Future (1998), The Politics of Gay Rights (2000), and Understanding Public Opinion, 2nd ed. (2002).
