Combat Challenge firefighter review of firefighter functional fitness

An outstanding book, perfectly aligned to the needs, requirements and solutions for fitter, stronger and healthier firefighters. I recommend this book for all firefighters, whether you are just starting your fitness program or need to take your workouts to the next level. This should also be required reading for all chiefs and training officers to help design, implement and manage your fitness and health program with your department and firefighters. The organization and development of the program makes it easy for beginners to follow, and for experienced firefighter-athletes to add new variations and challenges. The chapters on nutrition and hydration will be helpful to everyone. As a Combat Challenge and OCR competitor I found the program to be helpful in improving my performance and as an older fire chief (60) key components for long term health and longevity in the fire service. Lays a great foundation for optimal firefighter performance and health!

Overall, this book has great information and suggestions for firefighting. It's a book that is easy enough to understand (for all those non-exercise physiologists and dietitians) for potential recruits through experienced firefighters. As a student and practitioner of firefighter fitness/wellness, I can tell you that the information provided in the exercise section of this book is backed by more studies and research than you might expect! There are dozens of pictures depicting proper body mechanics from lifting to stretching. Something I was surprised to see were old-school style of static stretching along with a number of fantastic yoga-style compound stretches! On the nutritional side, it does a great job of emphasizing a balanced diet and hydration (majorly lacking sometimes!). However (my only gripe), some of the statements about saturated fats (especially those from animals) are questionable.
This book is well thought out and should be read through at least once. It's to the point, easy to read, and will hopefully convince potential and active-duty firefighters to enhance their fitness and well-being!

Every day is training day

I've been waiting for this book for over a year. I've been a follower of the authors prior to buying their book. They are both highly respected and regarded in the field. What makes it great is that it's written by Firefighters for Firefighters. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). I enjoyed the straight forward approach. It flows well and was enjoyable to read. Covers the Why, What, and How, to proactively approach your conditioning and fitness. Easy to follow, Big 8, 4 Pillars, 10 Commandments, and a call to action. I like that there is no special equipment needed, you can do this with what's already at the firehouse. Chapters with tips on lift, carry and drag (Injury prevention is so important). Nutritional tips that are realistic and easy to incorporate into your routine. I am sharing with my brothers and sisters, I highly recommend this for all firefighters.

Book was what he needed.

My son is taking college courses in high school. It's a great deal, as he gets ahead and i don't pay tuition. However when you rent a book from amazon, they must think it will be gently used by a college kid, get used once a week and left in a dorm room the rest of the time. My son needs his books every day. It is in a backpack and no matter how careful he is, it is too well used for amazon to take back.

Buy and READ

The third edition of Cultures and Organizations manages to significantly improve a great book. As a professor I have become deeply cynical of new editions -- I see shameless textbook producers make trivial changes every 18 months to kill off competition from used books. Fortunately this is not a text and the changes are real improvements from the previous edition.

If you are interested in globalization or comparative cultures you will want to buy and read this book even if you have already devoured the second edition. The most obvious changes: the expanded chapter (2) on studying cultural differences, the new proposed cultural dimension of indulgence (8), and the new chapter on evolution of cultures (12) are more than worth the time and effort of acquiring the new book.

This new edition resolves a dilemma for me: I was always torn between recommending Cultures and Consequences or Cultures and Organizations as an intro to Hofstede's ideas for someone who wanted a deep understanding of the research. I would now recommend that everyone, academic, business person, or curious reader, start with the third edition of Cultures and Organizations.

I first read/studied this book when I did my MBA in Graduate school. Since then, I have read and re-read it and each time, it has uncovered and unleashed more wisdom upon me on this topic. Not only does the book teach me how to isolate and be conscious of cultural sensitivities, it, more importantly reveals how unconscious, most people (we interact with) are on this topic. Cultural dimensions are examined and topics such as the "Power Distance", "Authority", "Time" "Non-Verbal communication", "Uncertainty avoidance", "Collectivism versus individualism", and "Femininity versus masculinity" are studied and explained in deeper depth.

I find that reading this book together with another book titled "International Business Communication" by Dr. David A. Victor would greatly enhance your understanding of the theories and concepts expounded by Dr. Hofstede. Dr. Victor invented a model (LESCANT) that simplifies the understanding of "Software of the Mind". "LESCANT is an acronym that represents seven areas in which cultural issues arise when dealing with international business communication. The acronym stands for Language, Environment, Social Organization, Context, Authority, Non-Verbal, and Time. Dr. David A. Victor, who is a professor of management and the Director of International Business Programs at Eastern Michigan University, created the model." [....]

In these times of globalization, understanding and accepting cultural diversity and appreciating other people's views about life and how human beings should relate to one another is increasingly important. In the late sixties, Dr. Geert Hofstede became interested in the cultural diferences between countries and has researched this subject since then. This book presents his work for the non-academic reader. It is not an easy book, but the educated reader will be able to fully understand the ideas; reading an article about factor analysis in an encyclopeadia may help to grasp how the data was interpreted. The book itself does not use any mathematical approach. Dr. Hofstede has developed a model that tries to explain the cultural diferences between countries and organizations; this model has been refined and improved over decades. Based on statistical analysis of a large body of data, he suggests that culture may be understood according to a number of principal components, such as "power distance", "individualism x collectivism", "masculinity x femininity", etc; each concept is carefully defined and the measurement method is explained. A discussion of what to expect from the relative strength of each dimension is presented; in other words, the factors are, to some extent, predictors of the dominant values and behaviors, both individual and institutional, of a society. I was truly amazed by the accuracy of these predictions, at least for the few countries I have lived and worked in and recommend this book to anyone who deals often with people from other countries and cultures.

Excellent visual based learning

This is an excellent book for those who are keen on visual based learning. It is not an adequate substitute for a text or a proper atlas, but it's great for just before the test sorta crammin'. I studied under Whitaker, and he is by far one of the best Anatomical teachers I have ever seen as far as graphically based learning/teaching is concerned. If you're reading this Dr. Whitaker, publish more of the sketches you use during lectures! None of the diagrams actually look directly like their anatomical representatives, but that's irrelevant. The main emphasis is on connections and relationships, as opposed to direct identification. A must have! It's so good that I've already had two copies stolen from me! Obviously, it's a big hit with other students as well...

Great for cranial nerves

I started using this book when we started the head and neck section in my anatomy class and I was hooked. To learn the cranial nerves it was the best. I memorized the pathways of each nerve and was completely set for the exam. I even refer to it now once in a while in my neuroanatomy course. I wish I would have used it through the entire course because it has some great sections on the arteries and nerves to simplify things and it's great to find a condensed resource where you can see all the muscles a particular nerve innervates. Also, the muscle charts were great as a review before the NBME subject test. I know that I will continue to use this book for a long time after first year.

Anatomy at your fingertips

This is a great book for quick reference. I use it A LOT when trying to visualize the path a specific artery or nerve runs. It is a great reference for diagramming things. I find I learn best when I draw things out -- this book helps you get the basics down.
