Another great book

This is the second in a series of workbooks for the SAI Speed Math Academy's Abacus Mind Math Course. It provides 10 additional weeks of daily math practice problems and mental exercises.

All of their books are well written, nicely illustrated, easy to read, understand and follow. They make learning easy and fun.

This is a workbook for daily exercise and practice. The Instruction Book covers the "how to do it" part of the course.

All of these SAI books are well worth the price paid. Highly recommended.

Love this book! Concepts are introduced in perfect order and the skill building week/practice work is very helpful. I used the workbook 1 and 2 to practice on my mind math and I loved it. Perfectly organized and it was very easy for me to build my skills. My child is having fun with this. I think the shapes puzzle is interesting. Wish they had more of these. It is nice to have an answer key, but I feel it should have been in the Instruction book.

Yowza! Sky Corgan has gone and done it again! And just what has she done, you ask? She's dazzled her readers with yet another riveting serial and what a sparkler it is! Strife is her latest offering and will be released in multiple installments so be forewarned, there will be cliffhangers. Each book is a relatively quick read with only approximately 40 to 45 pages which makes it perfect for a quick break or lunchtime treat. Personally, I love the excitement and anticipation of a well written serial with a great oh my god cliffhanger and Sky Corgan is a master of her trade. She knows exactly how to tease, tantalize and titillate her reader for maximum effect in order to create the pinnacle of a wonderfully entertaining experience. Strife is an extremely well written dark and compelling romance with complex characters but what is most surprising in this story is the underlying element of humor which I find that I very much enjoy. The story is told in the first person by the two primary characters, Pepper Kimbrough and Dmitri Strife, with alternating his and her points of view by chapter which just happens to be my favorite style of storytelling. Although the story is classified as a dark romance, it's anything but gloomy. It's exciting, fast-paced, appealing, realistic, romantic and seductive. The characters as always shine brightly in Sky Corgan's work and these are no exception. They are fascinating, captivating, engaging, relatable, sexy as sin and sometimes quite humorous. Corgan skillfully combines these elements into an enticing and divinely entertaining experience for her readers.
Book One: Pepper Kimbrough came to Hollywood to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. That was Plan A. Unfortunately, Plan A hasn't worked out so well. Of course, neither has her life but she's managed to survive, albeit by the skin of her teeth. She may not be innocent and vulnerable but she's definitely desperate. And hence, her current predicament - down on her knees with her head in James Sumner's lap with her mouth on his.... well, you know where her mouth is. Yep, this is now her life and this is what loosely passes for a somewhat questionable interview for a job - or at least she hopes. No, life certainly isn't beautiful, not for people like her - at least not yet. Sometimes, it's as ugly as your own worst nightmares and this is definitely one of those times. The only question: Is Pepper strong enough to survive it??? The memories of her past say no but her determination and inner strength say yes. Now it's time for Plan B: Please this jerkwad Sumner, get the job as a call girl making $500.00 an hour, save her money, go to college, then become rich and famous. But is she really willing to sell her body as well as her soul to accomplish her dream and yet somehow, still hang on to her sanity? Or ultimately risk her sanity to fulfill her dream? She's been through worse and it's not forever, right? Right!? She can do this and stay sane; she could be a escort/call girl, couldn't she? It's actually rather ironic since she had actually grown up rich and now she's only one breath away from homeless and starving. This is all worth it, isn't it? With only $9.03 left to her name, it has to be. She no longer has a choice. Or does she???
Rock Star Dmitri Strife has conquered the musical stage and now he's ready to conquer the big screen stage in Hollywood with his first starring role as Brodie Grant in the upcoming new movie, Master of Payback. He's just arrived and it's his first night in "tinsel town". His friend John is surprising him with a night on the town and it does turn out to be quite the shock. Instead of going to a club, John is taking him to a private brothel with beautiful babes galore, all willing to submit to his every desire. Oh my! But Dmitri has had his fill of endless nights of booze, never ending parties and meaningless sex with women always looking to use him as a means for fame and fortune. He doesn't wanted to be caught up in that nightmare again and almost leaves - until he sees her - the beautiful, blonde that wanders onto the balcony where he's hidden in the shadows. She looks so innocent and so sad. He can't help himself; he needs to know her name. But surprisingly when he approaches her, she doesn't seem to recognize him. He just won't tell her who he really is so he tells her his name is Brodie Grant, the name of his movie character, instead. This night may work out after all. Hmmm.... I wonder?????
Book Two:
Pepper, who has been given the moniker of Alexis by her boss James Sumner, spent her first night as an escort talking with Brodie/Dmitri and NOT having sex. Huh? Nope, no sex. During their night together, Pepper/Alexis confesses to Dmitri/Brodie that she was adopted but the day after graduating from high school, her parents kicked her out with only $700 and said they never wanted to see her again. What the heck? Pepper feels like a complete failure after not being able to seduce Dmitri/Brodie and begins to have serious doubts as to whether she can actually continue this job but unfortunately she's out of options so it's this or starve. But Pepper soon realizes that she may be in way over her head. Thirty five year old Dmitri Strife is very much looking forward to meeting his co-star, Marie Overton. It has long been his dream to meet and woo the beautiful sophisticated movie star and knows this is the perfect opportunity. Apparently she doesn't feel the same since she didn't even bother to show up for the cast luncheon so there will be no date tonight with Marie Overton. So, what's a handsome, successful heartthrob to do??? Request another night with Alexis/Pepper, of course!!! Oh my! And still, no sex! But strangely, Dmitri finds that he enjoys being with Alexis/Pepper and is drawn to beauty and her innocence and is somewhat puzzled by his feelings toward Alexis. He knows an association with her could be dangerous for his career but he can't seem to stop himself. He convinces himself that it's just the easy camaraderie he experiences with Alexis and nothing more.
Book Three:
Dmitri has started filming and finally meets his co-star but at first, Marie seems mildly interested in him. She leaves before he can ask her out. But is he still interested in her? Or would he rather spend time with Pepper? Hmm...Is his interest due to sympathy for Pepper's plight or possibly or is it real friendship he feels for the lovely young Pepper? Or could it be something more??? But the feelings Pepper/Alexis feel for Dmitri are far from friendly. Pepper/Alexis enjoys her time spent with Dmitri and more than a little attracted to him. She hopes to see him again and a small thread of hope is born that maybe, he may just feel something for her other than physical desire. James informs her that Dmitri has indeed requested her company again for the night. I wonder if Pepper/Alexis will be able to seduce Dmitri this time??? And yes, Pepper/Alexis now knows that Brodie lied to her about his identity and is really Dmitri Strife! Oh my goodness!
Book Four: Dmitri finally has the chance to ask Marie Overton for a date - and she accepts. But the long awaited date falls short of his actual expectations. Despite their great on screen chemistry, Dmitri is just not feeling a real connection with Marie. It seems, all Dmitri can think about is Pepper. Yep, his thoughts are filled with everything Pepper. It's only been one night since they were last together but he wants to see her again. And it also seems that Dmitri may have finally realized that he wants to do so much more than just see her and be her friend. He wants the beautiful young Pepper but will she still be the same innocent escort? Or did she have a client last night? Dmitri doesn't want anyone else to have Pepper and he's shocked at his own self revelation. He wants to be the only man to touch her beautiful body. What's a rock star to do? Request another night with Pepper, of course! No matter the cost! This is their third night together, so will they or won't they? But will Pepper still want Dmitri when she learns of Dmitri's relationship with Marie Overton? I'll never tell! No spoilers from me but I will say this...Beautiful young woman who came to Hollywood to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress but has fallen on hard times and is now broke and almost homeless-check! Handsome rock star who is tired of his life as a famous musician and has come to Hollywood for his first starring role in a movie-check! An unexpected meeting of two lost souls-check! Heated attraction, a little heartbreaking angst and hopefully a sweet romance-we'll see! That and a whole lot more! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read! I can hardly wait for the next installment!

Well this instalment was -for me- a bit more likable than the first 3 episodes. The story develops in a positive way and the characters take shape. I am still not a fan of this story. I hope it will develop to my liking.

Pepper wasn't sure if she should be heartbroken that Dimitri did not request her again but she was happy to have the night off. She appeared the next night on time and James informed her she had to pay rent on the dress. She wasn't happy but he told her if she argued he would hae to dock her pay even more.

Dimitri had spend a night with Marie but wasn't at all comfortable with her as he thought he would be. And he thought about Alexia so he called and specified he wanted Alexia again. James fought with him telling him she had another client that night and Dimitri argued with him till he got what he wanted. And he told James he wanted her in a plain dress. By the time Alexia got to his hotel he was upset because the dress was still too much. He found out the dress was what James gave her to wear. He let her know he wanted her to wear something of her own. She called James and ordered the car telling him she had to change and put on something of her own. Then Dimitri talked to James specifying exactly that.

She goes home and most of her clothes are on her bed so she ends up putting on blue jeans and a shirt and returns. Dimitri seems pleased. Tells her to pour Champaign and sit down as he turns on the TV. He sits close to her and holds her hand while watching the show. He is more like a friend than a client who is supposed to be using her. She wants to seduce him but is afraid if she does he will turn her down again.

After the movie she is going to take the glasses to the kitchen but he tells her to go to the bedroom. She does but hesitates in the doorway and he comes up behind her and walks her into the room. She goes to her side of the bed and starts to undress but he says stop and tells her to take her shoes off and lie on the bed in her clothes. She pleads for him to touch her and he does. They kiss and then he acts like he is going to rool over and go to sleep. She tells him not to stop and not to tease her any more. So he agrees and ends up stripping her. The make love and it is nothing like any of her past experiences.

She has to go to the bathroom and while in there she sees his phone so she looks at it and finds a message from Marie about their lunch date and that she would like to go out again. She gets depressed and realizes that he is just using her. Even if she thought there was more to it than that. End of part 4. Short read and this one does more than just refer to sex but is very graphic in its depiction. Though she is thinking all the time and puts herself down in her thoughts while he is holding her up in his mind not wanting to push her to hard. The scene described is that of two people falling in love, though she doesn't believe it. And he doesn't realize he is falling in love with her instead of Marie. There is a lot of emotions and feelings in this story but of course it does contain explicit sex and therefore is for mature adults over the age of 18.

About the Author
E. B. White (1899-1985) was an American author and long-time contributor to the New Yorker. He was the author of more than seventeen books of prose and poetry and coauthor of the English language style guide The Elements of Style but is especially well-known for his beloved children's classics, Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1973. He won numerous other awards and medals, including a special Pulitzer Prize for his body of work in 1978 and the 1971 National Medal for Literature and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, which commended him for making ''a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.''

A fascinating look at the greatest city

E.B. White was a very accomplished writer. His books and essays are some the best literature we have. His short book "Here Is New York" provides a good example of his gift as a generator of beautiful prose. He wrote this piece in 1948 and as the writer of the introduction, Roger Angell states White confronts the task with the knowledge that what he writes at his time will not endure because the city is ever changing metropolis. White likes to write with a heavy use of metaphor and he constantly anthropomorphizing what the city of New York has to offer us. He speaks of three basic types of individuals who spend their day in the city: the commuter who never really gets to know the city, the native individual who takes the city for granted and the ones who move in later in life who are in love with the city and enthralled with it's bill of fare. I enjoyed the book. It was fascinating to hear him speak of the boroughs that have evolved with the city. If he were to write the essay today I think he would be dismayed by the further disappearance of the places that he cherished and yet he would continue to express the belief that it is the greatest city in the world.

Not a book, but a good essay

As a New Yorker who grew up there in the 70's the essay is a fine piece, but this is NOT a book. It is a magazine article at best. Unless you want it for your bookshelf, and it will be lost among thicker volumes, you can just as easily find the text online or in your library.

Style, Truth, Prescience

Early to a party, I was looking at a friend's bookcase and pulled this slim volume from a shelf. After reading the first sentence, I knew I had to have it.

Originally published in 1949, E.B. White, who no longer lived in New York City, captured the soul and spirit of the place. Nothing has changed. At the time, the United Nations building was under construction, and the bombing of London was fresh in his mind. He ends the book with a vision that perfectly balances hope with danger, in words prescient of September 11 - I re-read those paragraphs on every anniversary, it has become my ritual.

But what originally drew me to the book is not only the truth and insight of White, but his style, his felicity of expression. The author of "The Elements of Style" certainly knew the rules, and knew when to break them, as well. The second paragraph ends with a run-on sentence 198 words long, a thrilling joy ride which itself demonstrates how impossible it is to capture, in prose, the enormity and importance of this city.

I agree with Russell Baker, this is "the finest portrait ever painted of the city."

Really a great book with simple lessons and guidelines to be successful

Really a great book with simple lessons and guidelines to be successful. I have read a few books about Coach Wooden, each is just as good as this one. This is a good book to get for your self or anyone who appreciates simple and honest advice from a master teacher, mentor, and English teacher, if you did not know John Wooden started as a high school English teacher in South Bend, Indiana as well as began his coaching career there. Just think, if he can start somewhere that few people would think of and have such a successful career as well as life, why not consider his advice and wisdom in this book.

Inspiring and Timeless!

Very few authors can inspire through their writings the way John Wooden does. Wooden does it again showing the world how we can all learn something from each person we interact with. A Game Plan for Life: The power of mentoring, includes lessons and philosophies for anyone regardless of their age, occupation, education, or experience. His lessons are simple and timeless. I especially enjoyed how throughout the book, he celebrated his mentors, honored his mentees, and empowered the reader to be truly inspiring. If Wooden suggests "...that the people who stand out are the ones who challenged me with words and inspired me with actions" then his most recent book has done just that. His simple life lessons remind the reader that remaining true to your values and ideals will help create a sense of calmness in your heart. This is not just a game plan for life ... it is a game plan brought to life. Personal anecdotes, inspirational messages, and simple reminders throughout the book suggest win or lose...the life lesson to the reader is . . . keep playing as teaching and learning are timeless.

Every so often, a great man or woman walks the Earth. Many times we don't realize or understand how great they were until they are gone. Such was the case with John Wooden. There have been many books written about John Wooden. This one ranks as one of the best--not just because it was the last one written before he died but because of the topic he addresses--the power of mentoring.

We are just starting to realize how important mentors are in the lives of our young people. The research and evidence regarding the power of mentors to help children break through poverty barriers is staggering.

The book covers seven people that were mentors in his life, and seven people that he mentored. His mentors include Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa, and his father who gave him this advice when he was young that he tried to live by his whole life:

1. Be true to yourself.

2. Make each day your masterpiece.

3. Help others.

4. Drink deeply from good books.

5. Make a friendship with fine art.

6. Build a shelter against a rainy day.

7. Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.

John Wooden was faithful, consistent, and committed. His priorities were in order, and he never deviated from those priorities. In this day and age when a new thing comes along every 60 seconds and gets our attention off the main thing, it is nice to see an example of someone who kept their "hands on the plow" and achieved things in his field that are still unmatched. There are no shortcuts. Achieving greatness in any field takes time, effort, and persistence.
