Excellent resource, accomplishes a lot in a short space
By Patrick D. Goonan
When I was in graduate school I had to pass a reading competence test in German. Since then, I have not done much studying in this area. However, recently I decided I wanted to review and practice what I learned and I have been searching for good resources.

After looking at many books and bringing along someone who is fluent in German, I settled on this as one of my primary resources. This book is well-organized, comprehensive and to the point. It also has very good exercises, stories and tips for learning the language. You can buy this book with confidence.

The pace of this book is quick and if you haven't studied German before, you may want to get supplementary resources. However, this text provides an excellent roadmap and you can use other books, tapes and software to support its basic approach.

Sweet relief
By Mel
I've been learning German this semester and it has been sooo hard. This book is far more organized than my college textbooks and so much cheaper. I've had so much anxiety watching my peers fly through the course effortlessly. From the very first chapter of German Made Simple, my German comprehension sky rocketed. I am having a much easier time understanding words and how they're strung together to make sentences.
Definitely add this book to your study material. I bought the Living Language CDs and it was a nightmare. Buy this instead.

"German Made Simple" Awesome Buy
By studentlife
I bought "German Made Simple" after purchasing several "learn German yourself" books. I have been trying to learn this language for the past few months. I bought audio CDs, beginner phrase books and even scoured the Internet for a good website. Of course, all of these were to no avail in teaching me German. Then, I discovered "German Made Simple". Best purchase of my life.
Many of the other products I bought had me memorizing dozens upon dozens of phrases that didn't help me much beyond introducing myself. I am the sort of language learner where I want to know how to construct my own sentences. I love to learn about grammar. If I have a firm grasp of the basics, I can skyrocket in my ability to learn more difficult stuff.
Not only did this book teach grammar, but it taught so much vocabulary in a way that is workable and not too overwhelming. I think in the first ten sections alone, your vocabulary ranges to around 300 or so words. I also thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue at the beginning of each section that used previous and new grammar and vocabulary in context.
The only downside of this book is the information overload concerning grammar in the first part of the book. My recommendation is to take it slow through the first ten chapters, especially where it explains noun declension. I was very confused at that part. I purchased "Handbuch zur Deutschen Gramatik (second edition)" at a discount book store and that helped tremendously with that. There are dozens of websites that explain that as well. I also used the website "Quizlet" and made my own flashcards of German vocabulary in each chapter. That was a lifesaver.
So, if you are in the same boat as me, this purchase would probably be the best decision of your life. It was mine. Not only did I learn how to speak and understand German (of what I know), but I know how to write and read in the language as well. The activities are great as is the whole book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is learning or has learned German.

Sand Opera, by Philip Metres

"Sand Opera is what political poetry must be like today in our age of seemingly permanent war."—Mark Nowak

Sand Opera emerges from the dizzying position of being named but unheard as an Arab American and out of the parallel sense of seeing Arabs named and silenced since 9/11. Polyvocal poems, arias, and redacted text speak for the unheard. Philip Metres exposes our common humanity while investigating the dehumanizing perils of war and its lasting effect on our culture.

From "Hung Lyres":

@

When the bombs fell, she could barely raise
her pendulous head, wept shrapnel

until her mother capped the fire
with her breast. She teetered

on the highwire of herself. She
lay down & the armies retreated, never

showing their backs. When she unlatched
from the breast, the planes took off again.

Stubborn stars refused to fall . . .

Philip Metres has written a number of books and chapbooks, most recently A Concordance of Leaves (Diode, 2013), abu ghraib arias (Flying Guillotine, 2011), To See the Earth (Cleveland State, 2008), and Behind the Lines: War Resistance Poetry on the American Homefront Since 1941 (University of Iowa, 2007). His work has appeared widely, including in Best American Poetry, and has garnered two NEA fellowships, the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, four Ohio Arts Council Grants, the Anne Halley Prize, the Arab American Book Award, and the Cleveland Arts Prize. He teaches at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio.

POWERFUL!
By Charles Ellenbogen
I was going to say that this is less a book of poetry than a work of art, but a book of poetry is a work of art and especially these days, a work of hope. There are those about who are experimenting with the question of what it is that makes a book, and I would say that Metres belongs in what I take to be a small, thoughtful and provocative crowd. Not only has he drawn his inspiration from a wide variety of sources, he has included diagrams that overlay some poems, fingerprints and calligraphy.

Most visible - after the stunning cover art (http://aalkadhi.com/content/I_am_baghdad/) - are the redactions. In Guantanamo Diary, an excellent companion piece, they are political. Here too, they are poltical, but they are also art, negative space reclaimed, much in the spirit of a British artist I've always admired, Rachel Whiteread (https://www.gagosian.com/artists/rachel-whiteread/selected-works).

But Metres' use of the redaction is not a gimmick. From the title of the collection, StANDard OPERAting procedure, to the opening invocation in 'Illumination of the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew' (if the flesh is the text of God / bid a voice to rise / / & rise again) to the closing prayer, 'Compline' (We lift the blinds, look out into ink / For light. My God, my God, open the spine binding our sight), Metres is a master of juxtaposition, placing words, images, even punctuation next to (and on top) of each other as he explores power, particularly the power of language, in the Iraqi conflict, in the cells of Guantanamo.

Consider the line quoted above from 'Compline.' It's the last poem of the collection, and by then almost every word of those lines carries tremendous weight. Who does Metres mean by 'we'? Does 'lift' have a positive connotation? Does it suggest physical force? What and who is blind? Blindfolded? And we see ink? Words? There's freedom there? Power? A reclaiming? And the first 'My God,' how should we say it? And what of the possessive? Whose God is it? The 'spine' of a book (as we get set to close Metres'?) "Binding' - Again, who is bound? Who's doing the binding? 'Our' - Again, first person plural. Who does it include? What does Metres want to see? Want us to see?

I could go on. But you should read it first.

The poet's personal connection to the pain and joy he explores can be felt on every page

A dazzling book. Reminded me of a modern-day Howl - at once urgent and lyrical, contemporary and historical. The poet's personal connection to the pain and joy he explores can be felt on every page. An exciting read. Highly recommend.

Shock and Awe
By Timothy Liu
Metres reminds us that "Somewhere someone's hands danced / over a keyboard to deliver the ordnance." Here, drone strike and typescript poem dovetail uncomfortably in the figure of a dexterous manipulated dance, the keyboard also suggesting an organ or Moog synthesizer to score this operatic sand opus for all who have ears to hear. Such overlays are further echoed in this book as object, vellum over paper enacting claustrophobic fatalities: "And: this hole was where he died, where they drove through a berm, into the Tigris. They told me about the scratch marks. I tried not to look, but I couldn't stop thinking about him trying to scratch his way out, the tank filling with water." Told me about. Tried not to look. Couldn't stop thinking. This reminds me of poetry's moral imperative as antidote to social mayhem, exemplifying Roethke's quip how "in a dark time, the eye begins to see." And shocked and awed voices begin to sing.

The Cambridge Handbook of Consciousness (Cambridge Handbooks in Psychology)From Brand: Cambridge University Press

The Cambridge Handbook of Consciousness is the first of its kind in the field, and its appearance marks a unique time in the history of intellectual inquiry on the topic. After decades during which consciousness was considered beyond the scope of legitimate scientific investigation, consciousness re-emerged as a popular focus of research towards the end of the last century, and it has remained so for nearly 20 years. There are now so many different lines of investigation on consciousness that the time has come when the field may finally benefit from a book that pulls them together and, by juxtaposing them, provides a comprehensive survey of this exciting field. An authoritative desk reference, which will also be suitable as an advanced textbook.

"This volume provides readers from many disciplines with the foundation and knowledge to date on the very comprehensive and complex study of consciousness."
--Janet L. Etzi, PsycCRITIQUES

"...the breath of coverage is impressive....a useful resource....In sum, the book displays how thoroughly our dualistically oriented culture's scientific investigation of human behavior is held in the grip of ancient traditional constructs that are imposed on observed events..."
--Noel W. Smith, State University of New York at Plattsburg, The Psychological Record

The Magnum Opus of Consciousness Studies
By Dr. Richard G. Petty
I recently reviewed the excellent The Blackwell Companion to Consciousness, and I had expected that this book would be similar. In fact the two are excellent complements to each other.

So what is this book about, how is it structured, and how does it differ from the Blackwell Companion?

Both books set out to answer some of the Big Questions: How does consciousness arise in the human brain? What is self-awareness? What are the most promising theoretical and experimental approaches to the questions of consciousness?

The Cambridge Handbook of Consciousness casts a wide net. There are 31 substantial chapters written by almost fifty of the best known authorities in different aspects of consciousness.

Part III Quantum Approaches To Consciousness
31. Quantum Approaches To Consciousness: Henry Stapp

As you will see from the titles of the chapters, he first section - the cognitive science of consciousness - is mainly involved with philosophical, anthropological, and linguistic approaches to the nature of the conscious mind, together with some intriguing insights gathered from artificial intelligence and computational models.

There are highly readable chapters on such many key topics: the role of consciousness thought in retrieving memories, consciousness and the control of action and the existence of consciousness in animals. '

The second section - the neuroscience of consciousness - covers a similarly wide variety of topics. The final chapter dares to tread where many other books have not, by examining models of consciousness inspired by insights from quantum theory. Henry Stapp has made substantial contributions to this highly controversial area that has also attracted distinguished academics like David Bohm and Roger Penrose. '

My only regret is that such a broad and brave book did not also dip into some of the issues recently discussed in Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century, With CD containing F. W. H. Myers's hard-to-find classic 2-volume Human Personality (1903) and selected contemporary reviews, which proposes that consciousness may not so much be created by the brain, but rather be contained by it.

For anyone interested in consciousness studies, both this book and the Blackwell Companion will be essential reading for many years to come.

Highly recommended

Dense, difficult, and nearly exhaustive
By Dennis Littrell
The first two chapters are nearly impenetrable, but such is the nature of philosophers writing on consciousness. If I were to give awards for impenetrable literature I would award third place to political and economic philosophers (think Marx and Veblen), second place to corporate lawyers, and the grand prize to anyone writing on consciousness, with a special award to philosophers writing on consciousness. (Even Daniel Dennett-not a contributor to this volume--can be annoying!).

The first problem is defining consciousness itself. Most of the contributors to this heavy (3.6 pounds--don't drop it on your toe!) tome give, or at least attempt, some sort of definition; however often their definitions are so highly qualified and so thoroughly couched in technical language that the general reader is not further informed. This is clearly a book for specialists, the "handbook" in the title notwithstanding. ("hand.book n. 1. a concise manual or reference book providing specific information or instruction about a subject" --the American Heritage Dictionary).

But concise this handbook is not. There is little to no instruction that I could find, but there is information and plenty of it. Almost a thousand pages long, with each page containing two dense columns, this is the sort of book that will never be read from cover to cover by any but the most masochistic of readers. For those whose professional work requires being up to date on the latest thinking about consciousness, this book may be of some real value as a reference. The author index contains about 3,500 individual names! The subject index covers 42 double-column pages. Furthermore, each essay (there are 31 of them) contains book and article references, in all hundreds of them. And there are some footnotes. I think this is impressive. Perhaps the indices and references are the most valuable parts of the book. I say perhaps because, to be honest, I was not able to read more than a small portion of the book.

There are three parts, "The Cognitive Science of Consciousness," "The Neuroscience of Consciousness," and "Quantum Approaches to Consciousness." The latter part consists of only one chapter by Henry Stapp. It contains a subtle corrective to the standard interpretation of the famous finger-lifting experiment by B. Libet. In this experiment, Libet showed that a willed action, such as willing a finger to lift, is preceded by a readiness potential that appears BEFORE the conscious experience of willing appears. Consequently, free will appears to be an illusion. I don't think this set well with Stapp and so he has a quantum corrective beginning on page 899. Unfortunately I wasn't able to understand it. It appears that the willed probability of action was there before the readiness potential.

There was a lot more I didn't understand, and I am not so sure the fault is entirely mine. I did understand, as in Uriah Kriegel's essay "Philosophic Theories of Consciousness: Contemporary Western Perspectives," that the consciousness problem that is notoriously difficult relates to what D.J. Chalmers called "the hard problem" and what Kriegel calls "phenomenal consciousness." Kriegel writes, "there is a sense of 'conscious' in which a mental state is conscious when and only when there is 'something it is like' [italics in original] for the subject--from the inside--to have it. Thus, when I take a spoonful of honey, there is a very specific--sweet, smooth, honey-ish, if you will--way it is like for me to have the resulting conscious experience." (p. 36)

Another example of phenomenal consciousness would be the subjective experience of the color red. This aspect of consciousness, as opposed to what I call the identity and awareness aspects of consciousness, is what is most mysterious. This is the aspect of consciousness that I believe is the bugaboo for most people, including many philosophers. Quite simply there is no way that such subjective experiences can ever become objective. The experience of the red that I see may or may not be the same as the experience you have; and there is no way that we can say for sure whether our experiences are the same or different.

Now let me quickly give my definition of consciousness as the term is generally used. It has three aspects: The first is awareness of the world (including awareness of our self and our processes, that is, self-awareness). The second is self-identity. Notice that awareness of self is different from identification with self. The third is experience or sensation: the feelings we get when we experience the world. This is what Kriegel calls "phenomenal consciousness."

It would be useful if all writers on consciousness defined just which aspect of consciousness they are talking about. Without clear definitions we are speaking in babblese like postmodern theorists or corporate lawyers trying to obscure and muddle the true message to be conveyed. I am sorry to report that some parts of this book that I did read seemed muddled. Perhaps in this case, though, the fault really is mine. Nonetheless I am willing to bet that sometime in the future people will look back and wonder what all the gobbledygook was about. I am somehow reminded of the medieval preoccupation of clerics with the problem of how many angels could dance on the head of a pin.

It's okay. But there are better out there.
By Karim Bayanzay
My professor at my medical school raved about this book. Didn't really find it useful. The information was scattered around everywhere and the diagrams weren't useful either. Everything is there, just not in an easy to find format.

I have since moved on to Hacker and Moore. That one is a little basic but it is written in a very understandable and organized way.

An instant bestseller that is poised to become a classic, Moonwalking with Einstein recounts Joshua Foer's yearlong quest to improve his memory under the tutelage of top "mental athletes." He draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of remembering, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human memory. From the United States Memory Championship to deep within the author's own mind, this is an electrifying work of journalism that reminds us that, in every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, March 2011: Moonwalking with Einstein follows Joshua Foer's compelling journey as a participant in the U.S. Memory Championship. As a science journalist covering the competition, Foer became captivated by the secrets of the competitors, like how the current world memory champion, Ben Pridmore, could memorize the exact order of 1,528 digits in an hour. He met with individuals whose memories are truly unique—from one man whose memory only extends back to his most recent thought, to another who can memorize complex mathematical formulas without knowing any math. Brains remember visual imagery but have a harder time with other information, like lists, and so with the help of experts, Foer learned how to transform the kinds of memories he forgot into the kind his brain remembered naturally. The techniques he mastered made it easier to remember information, and Foer's story demonstrates that the tricks of the masters are accessible to anyone. --Miriam Landis

From Booklist
If you sometimes can't remember where you put your car keys or, like Foer, the car itself, don't panic. You're not alone, and you can do something about it. In this intriguing look at the nature of memory, Foer reassures us that we don't need to acquire a better memory; we just need to use the one we have more effectively. Foer introduces us to people whose memories are both astonishing, like the man who could memorize 1,528 random digits in order, and frightening, such as a man with such an extreme case of amnesia that he doesn't know his own age and can't remember that he has a memory problem. He explores various ways in which we test our memories, such as the extensive training British cabbies must undergo. He also discusses ways we can train ourselves to have better memories, like the PAO system, in which, for example, every card in a deck is associated with an image of a specific person, action, or object. An engaging, informative, and for the forgetful, encouraging book. --David Pitt

Review
In this marvelous book, Joshua Foer invents a new genre of non-fiction. This is a work of science journalism wrapped around an adventure story, a bildungsroman fused to a vivid investigation of human memory. If you want to understand how we remember, and how we can all learn to remember better, then read this book

Amazingly Interesting and Helpful
By David Sheppard
This is one of those rare books that is not only a joy to read, but also immensely helpful. It can help all of us with something that is at once troublesome and worrisome: our memory. It does this with ease, not teaching us some grueling rote memory technique, but one that is easy, natural and intuitive. Yet Moonwalking with Einstein turns out to not be exclusively a how-to book on memory. So what is it?

Well, yes, it is about memory and how to improve it, but it is at once a history of techniques, a description of what memory is and what can go wrong with it, and also a running narrative of how the author, a journalist himself with no special memory skills, becomes one of the most proficient memory athletes in America.

I'd learned a mnemonic device to aid memorization decades ago while in college, and found it to be helpful, but for some reason I'd abandoned the technique once I graduated. But Moonwalking with Einstein expands the mnemonic technique I learned back then by use of something of which I'd never heard: the "Memory Palace." The Memory Palace exploits our inherent skill for remembering images and spatial locations, harnesses these two abilities we all posses in abundance, and relates them to the memorization of numbers, lists and assortments of other difficult to remember items. The amazing thing is that the Memory Palace not only makes memorization easy, it also makes it fun.

What makes the book so interesting is that it is narrative non-fiction and reads like a novel. The author locks his conflict with his own memory early on, gives a sense of rising tension as he accumulates the forces to overcome its limitations, and resolves this internal conflict at the end when he participates in the US Memory Championship. I didn't read it as urgently as I did today's number one bestseller, Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken, but still, I couldn't put it down.

In Chapter Five, I scanned the "to-do" list of fifteen items on pages 92/3 that the author had to memorize in his initial attempt, and developed the technique for myself as I read about the author memorizing it. As my Memory Palace, I used an old home of a high school friend with which I was still familiar, constructing useful details as I went. When I had finished reading about the author memorizing the list (took me about five minutes), I had memorized it myself, and I found that the items were not only immediately memorable, but that the list of items and their sequence was still with me days later, and so imbedded in my memory that I'm sure I'll ever forget it. All this, I accomplished effortlessly. This is a truly remarkable feat for me because I'm almost seventy years old and have chronic fatigue syndrome, which adversely affects all aspects of my memory.

It has also given me hope that I might finally learn ancient Greek. I tried to learn it several years ago, but found building a vocabulary so difficult that I abandoned the project. Rote memory was just too much trouble. I am interested in all things Greek, and as it turns out, the Memory Palace technique was invented in the fifth century BC by Simonides following his narrow escape from the collapse of a building. This in itself is a story you'll be interested in reading about. The author says that since the time of this ancient Greek, "the art of memory has been about creating architectural spaces in the imagination." Having been to Greece twice, I have all the makings of a superb Greek Memory Palace. While traveling around Greece and the western coast of Turkey for ten weeks, I visited many cities and islands: Athens, Thebes, Delphi, Ithaca, Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, etc. I can't count all the archaeological sites I visited. What I'm creating isn't just any old Memory Palace but actually a Memory Country. Within each location, I can identify as many locations for storing words and meanings as I need. But not only that, I can also use characters from Greek mythology to create actions and images to reinforce the material, as the author suggests. All this constitutes my Greek Memory Palace: the location where I will store ancient Greek words and meanings as I learn the language, in accordance with the instructions learned in Moonwalking with Einstein. None of it was difficult. I picked it up as I read the book.

The author describes how in the past people viewed their minds as something to perfect by loading it with all sorts of intellectual material. "People used to labor to furnish their minds. They invested in the acquisition of memories the same way we invest in the acquisition of things." [page 134] Some even believed that "the art of memory was a secret key to unlocking the occult structure of the universe." [page 151] This has given me an entirely new view of how to perceive my own mind and nourish it in the future.

The author also discusses how we came to lose touch with our ability to remember with the invention of the printed word. The history of that estrangement and how inventions like Wikipedia and the Internet foster that estrangement is a very interesting story. The author makes the reader aware of what is happening to us and provides a way to project ourselves into the future without suffering so much of technology's debilitating effects.

Perhaps the reason this book is so successful is that the reader never loses sight of the practical use of the information the author is providing because the author is discovering it himself and actively making use of it in his quest to make it into the US Memory Championship.

This is an important book. Everyone can benefit from reading it.

only on page 100, but have been trying the techniques on my own. Almost literally unbelievable.

So this is not a self-help book but a story of how the author was introduced to memory champs and their techniques and how he came to use them to get to the world memory championships.

I always thought I had a bad memory, especially for names - when I met people, I wouldn't remember them a week later, without some context. A few years ago I took a test on line for prospagnosia - the inability to remember faces - and I crushed it. So I had to revise my self-image regarding my memory; it's good for faces.

This book explains that our memories are much better at remembering images (and why).

So just a few pages in, I decided to try out the first technique of making names into images. Here's what I did.

Mr. Foer talks about the "curve of forgetfulness" invented by Hermann Ebbinghaus. I figured there's no way I'd normally recall this germanic name. So I thought about it for a while and came up with this image: A smirking woman, indicating the rastafarian man next to her with a jerk of her thumb. That's "Her mon," apologies to the Jamaican accent. Then I put them in chairs on the deck of a white clapboard house, which itself is half falling into a river as the tide ebbs. Hermann Ebbinghaus. A day later it took me maybe 7 seconds to recall this guy's name! I was seriously flabbergasted. And overjoyed. I decided to try it again.

My second attempt was with another name in the book. Wilder Penfield popularized the idea that everything we see and hear and sense, remain in our brains somewhere, and we just need to recall the details (this apparently is no longer the consensus). I thought about it and came up with pens with spiky hair, planted in a field like wheat blowing in the breeze, except they have their hands over their heads and they are shaking them wildly in dance. Days later I can recall this guy's odd name. The only complication here, to be honest, is that sometimes I reverse his first and last names... But WOW.

I also put a third name into memory and why. George Miller discovered that we can keep 7, plus or minus 2, pieces of info in our short term memory at a time. To remember his name, I pictured "King George" in full regalia (I actually have no idea what he really looked like but it doesn't matter), tied to where the mule or horse would make flour by walking around and around the mill. I have him sweating in the sun as he toils. There's an american flag in there as a reminder that he is King George. Then I put a mustache on him.

Why the 'stache? Because early in the book we're introduced to 'S' Dr. Luria's famous synesthesia/memory study. S always saw the number 7 as a man with a mustache. George Miller discovered "plus or minus 7." A day later I was trying to remember the third person I committed to memory and correctly came up with George Miller. But I didn't know who he was, when I suddenly recalled the mustache. Why, I wondered, had I given him a mustache? When the answer hit me I almost fell down. I exaggerate but I was thrilled.

This was all before page 30.

By the time he explained what a memory palace was and walked us through the first example (a shopping list), I had little problem memorizing the entire thing. Whoa. Garlic pickles, cottage cream, smoked salmon preferably with peat smoke, 6 bottles of white wine, 3 pairs of socks, 3 hoola hoops with maybe a spare, a snorkel, dry ice, email sophia, paul newman movie, skin-colored cat suit, elk sausages, director's chair and bullhorn, ropes and climbing harness, barometer. I might have left something out, I created that memory palace about an hour ago.

Simply amazing.

Foer mentions that these techniques were considered part of one's education for hundreds if not thousands of years, yet today we teach people to eat right and exercise without giving any lessons on how to properly use our memories. Let's get on that.

Should have read in high school. Still a great read for anyone at any age.

Can I improve my memory? I am no longer someone who is going to school or college. I have crossed over into the mid-life. Is there a way to not forget day-to-day tasks or important things to say during a conversion? Is it even possible or am I essentially stuck with what I have got at this point. I started reading this book to find answers to these questions.

In MoonWalking with Einstein, Joshua Foer takes us through the world of Mental Athletes and memory competitions. He humanizes the mental athletes and says, they are nothing more special than you and I. From his experience competing in US memory championship, he explains that anyone can master these memory techniques through smart training and hard work.

I was always of the opinion that memorization is bad and rote-memorization is really bad. He makes convincing arguments that memorization (filing your memories in the correct place in the brain) along with your experiences in a field will help you remember the right thing at the right time. Among other techniques, he introduces Memory Palace - an ancient technique to improve ones memory.

I recently read MindSet by Carol Dweck. In Moonwalking with Einstein, Joshua Foer complements the growth mindset thought by proving that one can accomplish anything with sheer effort, hard work and smart training. I pretty much used kindle audio narration to hear the book, which was excellent. Overall I highly recommend this book.
