Princess Helena (1846-1923) was the third daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A steady, dependable young woman, known as ‘Lenchen’ within the family, she was particularly ‘useful’ to her demanding and recently widowed mother, who could not bear to lose her to a marriage which would oblige her to move and live abroad with her husband. This is a well-researched biography of Princess Helena, daughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Helena is one of the lesser-known, but hardest working royals. Her public and charitable works set an example that is still followed by the British Royal Family today. If you are interested in the Royal Family or the Victorian Era, you will like this book.

The objective of this book is to provide the techniques necessary to study the motion of machines. A focus is placed on the application of kinematic theories to real-world machinery. It is intended to bridge the gap between a theoretical study of kinematics and the application to practical mechanisms. Students completing a course of study using this book should be able to determine the motion characteristics of a machine. Further, such analysis could be performed on design concepts to optimize the motion of a machine arrangement.

This second edition incorporates much of the feedback received from instructors and students who used the first edition of the book. First, a thorough examination of the accuracy for all equations and Example Problem solutions was performed. Second, solution steps have been added to the Example Problems, highlighting the general solution procedure. Third, the material on mechanism force analysis has been greatly expanded. These and many other modifications were made to more effectively promote the understanding of mechanism analysis.

It is expected that students using this book will have a good background in technical drawing, college algebra, and trigonometry. Also, knowledge of vectors, mechanics, and computer application software, such as spreadsheets, will be useful. However, these concepts are also introduced in the book.

The approach of applying theoretical developments to practical problems is consistent with the philosophy of engineering technology programs. This book is primarily oriented toward mechanical- and manufacturing-related engineering technology programs. It can be used in either associate or baccalaureate degree programs.

Following are some distinctive features of this book: Pictures and sketches of machinery that contain mechanisms are incorporated throughout the text. The focus is on the application of kinematic theories to practical mechanisms. Both graphical techniques and analytical methods are used in the analysis of mechanisms. A student copy of Working Model™ a commercially available dynamic software package, is extensively used in this book. Tutorials and problems that utilize this software are integrated into the book. Suggestions for implementing the graphical techniques on computer-aided design (CAD) systems are included. Every chapter concludes with a few case studies. These cases illustrate a mechanism that is used on industrial equipment and challenges the student to discuss the rationale behind the design and suggest improvements. Both static and dynamic mechanism force analysis methods are introduced. Every major concept is followed by an example problem to illustrate the application of the concept. Every example problem begins with an introduction of a real machine that relies on the mechanism being analyzed. Numerous end-of-chapter problems are consistent with the application approach of the text. Every concept introduced in the chapter has at least one associated practice problem. Most of these problems include the machine that relies on the mechanism being analyzed. Where applicable, end-of-chapter problems are provided that utilize the analytical methods and are best suited for programmable devices (calculators, spreadsheets, math software, etc.) Initially, I developed this textbook after teaching mechanisms for several semesters and noticing that students did not always see the practical applications of the material. To this end, I have grown quite fond of the case study problems and begin each class with one. The students refer to this as the "mechanism of the day." I find this to be an excellent opportunity to focus attention on operating machinery. Additionally, it promotes dialog and creates a learning community in the classroom.

    Solid textbook

    Required text for the course I took, way cheaper than the school bookstore. Sometimes, I thought things weren't explained well, and some of the questions at the end of the chapter used situations that were not addressed in the text. Even the instructor agreed with that. Also, the text deals with the theoretical aspect of some of the items, where our instructor was a retired engineer, and taught to the use of the subject matter in the real world. Overall though, the book was adequate

    Great Machine Design Textbook

    This book is pretty easy to understand, but it's short on images. I had to read a lot of text to understand the concepts. It is very clear in its descriptions; however. It's fairly easy to navigate around this book. It's created for people who are studying Machine Design. It's a textbook, so nothing like a plot.

    DO NOT BY THIS BOOK!!

    It appears this book was edited very poorly from the third edition to the fourth edition. For example we would be assigned homework problems at the end of each chapter the answers to the odd problems are in the back of the book but most of the answers are from the third edition text there were very few answers in the back of the book that were correct we know because our instructor had both editions of the book. There are numerous typos through out the book incorrect units bad equations the whole chapter on cams is useless none of the cam displacement equations work we had to use another reference when we got to the cam section. About the only thing in this book that was accurate was the graphical portions of each chapter that was it. I do not recommend this book if you need to learn anything about kinematics evaluated analytically.

    Fantastic book.

    I got my Btech from IIT Madras where they used this text as the reference. It is a very good book and I highly recommend it. Books like Halmos's FDVS are harder to follow and are more abstract. This book is a fantastic introduction to the subject and I feel that it is a must for anyone who is seriously inclined towards pure math or communication engineering.

    Knitter's Weaving Book

    I have known how to knit since I was a child, but I’ve mainly only finished Afghans and scarves. Never would I attempt anything with sleeves. Knitter’s Weaving Book tells me I can accomplish “going around the corner” by combining weaving and knitting.
    It gives step-by-step instructions on making my own loom. Amazingly, I had almost all of the necessary items needed. (Actually, I have the straight pins, I just can’t find them.) I’m still practicing weaving, and I’m hoping to finish some mittens before winter ends.

    Great book for people who are just starting on the topic

    I got this book for my 16 year old daughter who was interested in the topic. She read it in about two days because she read it non-stop. It was a challenging read but fruitful. She loved it. What she liked about it was that was organized really well and it gave a background on every topic. Also at the end of each chapter was a section on recommendations based on current knowledge, which was directly helpful for understanding what to do. It repeated things a lot to ensure the reader understood the points of view, which was also great. Recommended for anyone wishing to get into this topic and looking for a great first book to read.

Prior to consulting, Tad spent ten years on Madison Ave as an award-winning creative, producing work for American Airlines, Burger King, Canon, and other Fortune 100 companies while working at some of the World's largest advertising agencies. Mr. DeWree is a 1984 graduate of the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin.

    Great ideas, boiled down to the essence

    I was surprised to find that this book was a collection of ideas with little elaboration. However, the ideas are classic and mostly self-explanatory.

    This is a short book that should be read repeatedly. The author has spent a lifetime in advertising and marketing and knows what matters most.

    Even the strongest brands need ongoing work and fine tuning. Mr. DeWree's 50 Essential Rules of Great Branding is an effective, practical and handy brand building guide. The power behind this book is in its beautiful simplicity. This book is a fresh departure from the many books on marketing plans and branding that are cumbersome and lengthy thus not regularly used. This book can be used as a powerful daily reference guide to new ideas and inspiration to build any brand and business.

    Even if you are a slow reader, your coffee will most likely stay hot while you consume this gem. It will not turn you into a branding expert, but may either inspire you to knuckle down and become one, or at least you will recognise and appreciate the real McCoy from now on.     I just returned from a three-week trip to Botswana and plan to write a book that takes place there. I ordered this book because (a) I saw how good it was while I was there, and (b) mainly because it's what my native guide used in Botswana. I can't imagine a much better endorsement than that.
