About the Author
George W. Noblit became a sociologist in the 1970s, a time of turbulent social change. Research on crime, delinquency and deviance led to a focus on schooling in the lives and futures of youth. Through a study of school desegregation, he began a program of research on the social construction of race, using ethnographic research to study schools and other educational scenes. Noblit is intrigued with how knowledge―often taken as good in its own right―is implicated in creating the very problems it is asked to solve. Noblit studies the various ways knowledge is constructed and how the competition over which knowledge counts construct powers and difference. This process means exploring both the highest reaches of theory and the everyday lives of people as they struggle to make sense of the world. To Noblit, “there is not a theory-practice gap, only a failure of imagination.” Noblit conducts funded evaluation projects, most recently on A+ (arts-enhanced) schools (the subject of his 2009 book), charter schools and prison education for youth adult offenders in North Carolina. “For me, evaluation and policy studies are a way to be part of larger political processes in our society,” he says, “and to help shape the agendas of important innovations.”

About the Author
William David Spencer (Th.D., Boston University; M.Div., Princeton Theological Seminary) is the ranked adjunct associate professor of theology and the arts at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's Center for Urban Ministerial Education (CUME) in Boston. He has served as protestant chaplain at Rider University, adjunct professor with New York Theological Seminary and helped establish and serve as director of personnel for the Alpha-Omega Community Theological School (A.C.T.S.). Spencer is an ordained Presbyterian Church U.S.A. and speaks regularly at churches, conference and classes on biblical, theological and experiential aspects of marriage. He is also the author ofMysterium and Mystery: The Clerical Crime Novel, Dread Jesus and coedited Chanting Down Babylon: The Rastafari Reader.

I have read the book with great joy and blessing. I could hardly stop reading because I wanted to know the story of the next one too!

These are my comments on the book:
• I am particularly happy about the concluding chapter because David Spencer summarizes excellently the content of the book. It reflects what I also wrote down, only in more details such as summarizing each chapter and highlighting some issues of it.
• All people seem to know each other - it’s an expression of an active network of followers of Christ reaching out to the unique world of those who ‚fill the screens‘, the red carpets, the celebrated ones!
• It’s a manifesto of GOD who can really work with anyone and not just work but empower people willing to make themselves available to HIM. Sheri brings it to the point when she says: „God has a jealous love for me, to fulfill his call on my life, not my call on my life!“ What a beautiful realization!!
• It’s stories of broken people, people with broken relationships - most testimonies contain divorces and/or themselves being rejected. However it’s testimonies of acceptance and restored relationships with the Creator!
• It’s a book witnessing of GOD’s power in just about any circumstance his people are in - if they are there because of HIS call!
• Sheri’s and maybe one other testimony are really personal, vulnerable and not so much focusing on ‚what they did and achieved‘. That’s why I like those few testimonies. The listing of achievements is nice but the transformation in/of an individual is powerful.
• To summarize: Get the book, get the message out there - for the sake of encouragement to those you have not given room in your book but are also reaching out and as a witness to the Glory of GOD who is in the business of transforming lives of people to whom a red carpet is not enough!!

Great Resource for Parents, Teachers & Camp Counselors

I gave this book to the elementary schools my grands attend. The teachers were very appreciative for such great ideas as everyone winds down the school year. I would also recommend this book to camp counselors, playground supervisors, and to anyone else who wants fun activities for ages 6-12.

This wonderful book has so many ideas that there is absolutely no reason to ever be bored again as a kid. So, the next time your child says, "I'm bored" ask him/her to pick out a page and then go do it. Fabulous book. One I wish I'd owned when my own kids were young, however, am pleased I have it for when grandchildren come visiting.

Ho Hum

There is little to be said for such a cliche-ridden plot filled with stereotypical characters. The plot is hard to follow. It changes speakers and points of view suddenly and without warning. Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald were an item when they were in the New York police academy and find themselves partnered for a special ops project in a unit, NYPD Red, dedicated to protecting the rich and famous. Of course, that relationship creates problems even though Kylie is married, it so happens, to a Hollywood golden boy and that they are tasked with keeping visiting Hollywood royalty safe. Things go wrong as the bodies start dropping and dropping and dropping... It seems that a Hollywood reject has decided to exact revent in several creative ways and leads the NYPD on a merry chase, each murder getting more horrendous, until the ultimate victim's number comes up.

Jordan and MacDonald can't escape their previous relationship, and they can't follow department rules. They make them up as they go along. What they get away with would get any other law enforcement officer fired and probably arrested. It's Mr. Toad's wild ride for the reader, who has to hold on with both hands and try to keep up with the disfunctional plot and constant changes in points of view, while keeping track of the emotional roller coaster Jordan and MacDonald ride through it all. If what you want is escapism, simply keeping up with this would guarantee a trip to another reality. If you are looking for a good plot with three dimensional characters who interact with some degree of normality, this is not the book for you.

POSSIBLY THE BEST ONE YET

A little love, a little hate, a little conniving, a lot of murder, lies, deception, and police work go into making this the best NYPD Red book so far. It's great when you know the primary characters, know what good cops they are, and how well they work together, but still have to figure how who the villains are.

James Patterson does an excellent job of keeping McDonald and Jordan "just partners" when there's obviously more below the surface and in their past. He writes a great story that keeps you guessing as to who the culprit is and the why. He's also able to add a couple of short side stories in without making everything seem jumbled and mixed up. It's easy keeping up with everyone and everything going on.

I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next NYPD Red.

A page turner at the very least

James Patterson's "NYPD Red" is the story of a special task force of the New York Police Department that looks out for the A-Listers who come to the city. Movie actors, producers, directors and other celebrities who need a bit of special protection are their assignments. Detectives Zach Jordan and Kylie Macdonald have their work cut out for them as partners when New York hosts "Hollywood on the Hudson" where beautiful actresses arrive on the red carpet along with TV and movie-making people who are famous around the world. There are showings of movies, interviews and all that viewers and attendees want to see. New York City is in the process of trying to recruit some of the entertainment business to their city from Los Angeles where most of it resides. NYC would love to lure some of the glitz and glamour for their own.

All goes well until a well-known producer dies during his breakfast. Zach Jordan is the first cop on the scene from the NYPD Red unit and his partner, ex-girlfriend, Kylie Macdonald, is soon on the case, too. They can't afford to make mistakes on cases like this, so they go to work on the investigation. The killing doesn't stop here, though. As they team up and search for a deranged killer who has a plan all his own, it becomes more and more dangerous for those at the event, as well as for Zach and Kylie.

This is a thriller full of suspense and never knowing what will happen next. There is a lot of action and the ending is an edge-of-your-seat finish to a book that doesn't let the reader relax for a minute.

James Patterson has done an excellent job with this one, character-wise and story-wise. The dialogue is good and it is well-paced. Recommended for suspense/thriller/mystery readers.

I'm looking forward to reading NYPD Red 2.

Interesting, but without much depth

If you are interested in Egyptian hieroglyphics and wish to get a quick idea of how they work,

"Hieroglyphs Without Mystery" will be a useful book for you. Perhaps the sort of volume that might

be of interest to read prior to that vacation in Egypt or the visit to the Egyptian collection

someplace. Beyond that, it is of very limited usefulness. In particular, if you are interested in

actually learning hieroglyphics in any serious manner, this book will be of minor or no use and

is best bypassed for other texts. The hieroglyphic vocabulary is thin and many of the basic concepts

of the language are never explored. If you have to know that your owl before the viper needs a reed

leaf to mean "in it", but does not need one when it is before "pr" (house) to mean "in the house",

this book will not be the one to tell you. On the positive side, the book does present some very

nice photographic examples of artifacts with the translations of their text broken down by

line/phrase. For this reason only, it may be of more than passing interest to a student of

hieroglyphs.

In summary, if you want to really learn hieroglyphs and middle Egyptian, other books are more

appropriate. If you want a quick read and are not intent on a real understanding in depth, this

book will fill your need.

Very Basic

While this book is easy to read and entertaining, it doesn't provide much insight into the structure of the Egyptian language. It mostly teaches the meaning and vocalization of a few signs, and provides some examples of how these signs would be combined into an inscription. This book would be good for people who are curious about the hieroglyphs, and want to learn the real basics. Anyone with a deeper interest in the Egyptian language/culture would probably find Collier/Manley introduction to the hieroglyphs more helpful.

A great primer

Hieroglyphs without Mystery by Karl-Theodor Zauzich.
Of the four basic texts I have on learning hieroglyphs, this book is perhaps the simplest of the four to use. It has a basic vocabulary and basic grammar building. The exercises and the flow of the book didn't appeal to me as much as Collier and Manley's, but that might be due to the fact it is translated from German (I have studied German, but not well enough, alas, to attempt to read hieroglyphs through German if I can avoid it!). This book also incorporates a transliterated system to aid learning.
I appreciated the honest in the first sentence: 'This is this first point to remember: Egyptian hieroglyphic writing was mastered in its own time by many people, most of whom were no more geniuses than present-day people (or Egyptologists) are.'
Sometimes the study of something such as hieroglyphs can be unnecessarily intimidating; this book reduces anxiety by reducing the language to easily understood components of vocabulary and grammar.
This book would make a good volume for self-study, for church or study groups to use for informal learning, and for one-semester courses for those interested in ancient history or ancient languages.

At the start of Zouroudi's intriguing first in a series based on the seven deadly sins, self-styled investigator Hermes Diaktoros (aka "the fat man") arrives from Athens on the island of Thiminos to look into the death of Irini Asimakopoulos, a young woman whose body was found at the foot of a high cliff. Irini's sad story unfolds slowly as Hermes, who can ask questions gently or demand answers gruffly, talks to a number of people involved, including Irini's husband, Andreas; her putative lover, Theo Hatzistratis; Theo's wife, Elpida; and the island's police chief, Panayiotis Zafiridis, who officially deemed her death an accident but privately believes it was suicide. The secrets the locals keep or share can't be hidden from Hermes, who weighs the evidence and, in the end, rewards or punishes in ways that have little to do with written laws. Zouroudi writes well, but this leisurely tale is more likely to appeal to armchair travelers interested in Greece than mystery buffs.

Anne Zouroudi was born in England and has lived in the Greek islands. Her attachment to Greece remains strong; the country is the inspiration for much of her writing. She now lives in northern England.

Mystery of just rewards

Hermes Diaktoros is not a policeman, a detective, or a private investigator. He works for a 'higher authority' as he so often reminds us, allowing people to believe that he has carte blanche from a secret arm of the government. There is no limit to which he might not ascend or incident which he might not tackle. He has knowledge about persons that it should be very difficult to discover, yet it seems to be at his fingertips. He is the one who comes to ensure justice when justice fails.

He meets the local people and watches how they interact. He is on the scene as much to solve a tragic dilemma as to ease people's lives. He arrives out of nowhere when he is needed and leaves quietly when the troubles--everybody's troubles--have been sorted out. He is not averse to allowing the bad people pay with their lives. Justice, pure and simple. This is what it might be like if we all got exactly what we deserved.

Hermes has wonderful, sometimes comical, little quirks, which all lead us in a direction that might help us determine who he really is. His domain is Greece and all those localities that once belonged to Greece, reaching back to the height of what might have once been the Greek empire. The little islands in the Aegean, mythical places populated with persons all too real, yet seemingly lost in time. And his powers are truly Olympian.

Zouroudi's characters are beautifully drawn, ordinary people who carry with them the mystery of the past, the difficulties of the present, the dreams that never happened for them, all the occasional joys and the constant sorrows. Hermes can be Father Confessor, psychological analyst, or judge. He smokes cigarettes that are no longer made (yet the tobacconists always seem to find a pack or two on the top shelf behind other things); he loses, misplaces, or forgets lovely little matchboxes in which the right people find the most amazing things, all part of the mystery of Hermes himself, and pertinent to the mystery at hand. Hermes is the 'orchestrator.' At the end of the story, only then, do we realize the extent of the journey and the place to which Hermes has brought us.

Great detective series

I found one of this series in my local thrift shop and ordered all the rest of the "seven deadly sins" series because I liked it so much. Anne Zouroudi lived in Greece and has captured many intimate details of village/island life in these books. I have spent a lot of time in Greece and these books bring back so many great memories. they are wonderfully written and the detective hero, Hermes Diaktoros from Athens! is fabulous. Is he really a manifestation of the god Hermes or just a wannabe? Who knows, but the stories unwind with enough mystery as to who he is that the question seems absolutely plausible especially given the magic of the Greek island settings.

Lovely writing, intriguing protagonist

THE MESSENGER FROM ATHENS is a lyrical novel about a bleak place and the people who live there. A young woman has been found dead at the bottom of a cliff, and the local authorities have written off the death as an accident. Enter Hermes Diaktoros (literally, Hermes Messenger) who says that he has been sent by a higher authority to investigate the death. The story that he uncovers is one of passion, cowardice, and long-held anger. Eventually the fat man discovers the truth and dispenses a kind of justice that has nothing to do with the criminal courts. I was fascinated by this book and read it in only two or three sittings. I will seek out and read other novels by this author.
